It’s less of a single problem and more of a slow-moving domino effect.

It starts with plaque — that sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth after eating. Plaque feeds on sugar and produces acid. That acid erodes enamel (the hard outer shell of your teeth). Once enamel is gone, it doesn’t come back. The bacteria move deeper. Cavities form. Cavities harbour more bacteria. Those bacteria affect the gums. The gums become inflamed and may bleed occasionally, and the breath starts to smell.

The good news? Every single stage of this process is either preventable or treatable — especially early on.

Tahara’s story

I prided myself on never having had a filling. However, I noticed my gums bled occasionally but assumed it was because I brushed “too hard.” I changed my brush to a softer one but still my gums bled.

I thought maybe it was just a thing that happened to some people sometimes and didn’t worry about it too much until I saw an advert on the telly that showed a woman bleeding from her eye and saying something like ‘you wouldn’t ignore blood if it was coming from anywhere else on your body’. I was a little freaked out but thankfully that led to me seeing my dentist who confirmed that I had gingivitis — the earliest, most treatable stage of gum disease. My immune system was fighting back, which is why my gums bled. The bleeding wasn’t the problem. It was the symptom of the problem.

He gave me a deep clean dental hygiene treatment and introduced me to flossing. A follow-up appointment later and my gums stopped bleeding – I’m just thankful I caught it early and didn’t have to lose any teeth or have filings!

Left untreated, gingivitis becomes periodontitis — a deeper infection that attacks the bone and tissue holding your teeth in place.

A helping hand from Sonria Dental Clinic

Your mouth is a complex, living ecosystem that does an enormous amount of work — talking, eating, smiling, occasionally saying things you regret at parties. It deserves a bit of attention.

You don’t need a 47-step oral hygiene routine. You need a few things done consistently and correctly:

Brush for two minutes, twice a day — most people brush for 45 seconds. Time yourself. You’ll be surprised.

Floss daily — yes, actually. Brushing only cleans about 60% of your tooth surfaces. The rest is between your teeth, where decay loves to hide.

Don’t rinse with water after brushing — spit, don’t rinse. Let the fluoride in your toothpaste do its job.

See a dentist every 6–12 months — even if nothing hurts. Especially if nothing hurts. Decay is sneaky.

Cut back on sugar and acidic drinks — or at least don’t sip them slowly all day. Every sip is an acid attack on your enamel.

If you have any questions or concerns relating to any of the above please call, email, WhatsApp or pop in to see us at the clinic

With love

The team at Sonria Dental Clinic
"_seopress_social_twitter_img_attachment_id":0
[1

post-5656","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
