Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional braces can correct crooked and crowded teeth, a misaligned bite, and jaw problems. Braces also eliminate problems you may have with eating, speaking properly, or with keeping your teeth clean. They consist of standard metal brackets that are placed on your teeth with an adhesive and connected by wire. The wire is adjusted to the metal bracket with an elastic band. They require periodic tightening so steady pressure can gradually straighten your teeth and align your jaw.

Traditional braces are more effective at treating extreme overcrowding than other options like clear braces or Invisalign aligners and are less expensive. They give your orthodontist the control he needs to move the teeth in small increments at a time.

Straightening your teeth doesnā€™t have to be boring! Braces with coloured bands make orthodontic treatment more fun. Every time you go in for an adjustment, you can change the colour of your braces bands. You can choose exactly how you want your colours to be, such as all one colour, one colour for the top and a different colour for the bottom, or mix and match.

While metal braces brackets are still the most common, there are various other treatment options available.

Top tips for taking care of your braces:

  • Avoid foods that arenā€™t braces-friendly, such as caramels and soft chewy sweets; or hard and crunchy foods that could damage your brackets. Other foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can get stuck in your braces, and should be cut into small pieces.
  • Brush, at least, twice daily, and floss appropriately. This will help prevent staining to your teeth. We may recommend you use a special brush designed to get into the crevices and different surface in metal braces.
  • Be punctual with your follow-up appointments, not only for the adjustments to the braces to be made, but also for check-ups and hygiene.
