|Orthodontic treatment is a method of straightening and moving teeth to improve their appearance, function, and your long-term oral health. It will help spread the biting pressure over all your teeth, while making them easier to clean. Orthodontic treatment can also help with correcting your bite, relieving strained jaw muscles that may be causing you unnecessary headaches. When a malocclusion is severe, it can cause problems with eating and/or speaking, and this can be corrected with the correct orthodontic treatment. There are various types of malocclusions that can be diagnosed by either your dentist or orthodontist, and can be managed with the right orthodontic treatment:
The best time for orthodontic treatment is generally during childhood, although adults can, too, have treatment. It is necessary to wait for enough teeth to come through prior to starting treatment. You will also require a full examination, consisting on a consultation with an orthodontist, the taking of x-rays and taking impressions of your teeth. Our orthodontist will then be able to discuss treatment options with you.
Some people may not have enough room for all your permanent teeth and may need to have some extractions prior to commencing treatment. Again, once we assess you thoroughly, we will be able to advise on best practice. Extractions are not the only form of treatment to create space.
All orthodontics appliances may feel stranger at first, and you will experience different levels of discomfort as you go through the treatment. You will need your treatments to be adjusted, generally, every four to six weeks. Of course teeth are usually more uncomfortable immediately after your appliances have been adjusted. The length of treatment generally depends on how severe the malocclusion is, and it may take anything from a few months to a couple of years. However, most cases can be treated in one or two years.
When the desired position of the teeth is achieved, the teeth need to be held in that position for a period of time (‘retention period’) with retainers. This is so the surrounding gum and bones also settle in the desired position. Retainers can either be removable or fixed, depending on the original problem. Nevertheless, even after the retention period, it is normal for minor tooth movements to occur throughout your life. However, it is unusual for teeth to alter enough to need further orthodontic treatments but this, again, is dependent on the aftercare of the patient.
The success of orthodontics treatment does not only depend on the skills of our orthodontists, but also the helpfulness and cooperation of the patients (and parents, if the patient is a child). It is extremely important to follow all the instructions provided by our orthodontist and comply with the appointments set throughout your treatment plan. It is also important to maintain outstanding oral health throughout your treatment. Brackets, wires, and braces fixed to your teeth can cause food to become trapped and cause more plaque and tartar to build up than usual. Take care of your teeth, whether when carrying or orthodontic treatment or otherwise, by following the following basic steps:
Looking and feeling great plays a major role in the way we all live our lives. From the places we go to the people we meet and the decisions we make. Feeling confident is key in the success of our personal and professional lives.
